Observa la separación de cargas a ambos lados de la membrana; el potencial de equilibrio de cada ion (Nernst) depende de su gradiente de concentración.

Interpretación

El potencial de membrana surge de la permeabilidad selectiva y los gradientes iónicos; se sitúa entre los potenciales de equilibrio del K⁺ (≈−90 mV) y del Na⁺ (≈+60 mV), más cerca del ion más permeable.

Perla clínica

La ecuación de Goldman pondera varios iones por su permeabilidad. En reposo domina el K⁺ (potencial cercano a −70 mV); durante el potencial de acción domina brevemente el Na⁺.
